Breakfast Muesli with Pecans, Hunza Raisins and Cacao Nibs

My first experience eating muesli was in Germany during a visit meeting my soon-to-be in-laws. In Europe (specifically Switzerland and Germany), muesli is a popular uncooked breakfast cereal based on rolled oats, dried fruits and nuts. It is typically soaked in milk (I use my homemade almond milk) or yogurt and topped with fresh fruits. For extra sweetness top it off with a drizzle of honey or maple syrup.

Muesli is a simple and healthy snack than can be enjoyed in place of more common, processed cereals. The possibilities for recipes are endless, you can add different nuts, seeds, or dried fruits. Make sure to soak the muesli for a few minutes, or until the oats soften to your liking. I stored this muesli in the fridge since I added dates and ground flaxseeds.


Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.

 Muesli Recipe

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup rye flakes
  • 1/4 cup coconut flakes
  • 1/4 cup pecans or other nuts
  • 1/4 cup slivered almonds
  • 1/4 cup hunza raisins
  • 2 dates, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseeds
  • 2 tablespoons cacao nibs or chopped dark chocolate

    In a bowl combine oats, rye flakes, dried fruit, nuts, and cacao nibs. Mix well. Store muesli in an airtight container. If you include the flaxseeds and dates, store in fridge, otherwise it keeps for 2 months at room temperature.

    Total Time: 10 minutes
    Yield: 8-10 servings
